A Talisman-Making Workshop on Southeast Asian Hauntology

Spectral Narratives & Me is a project involving a talk and hands-on workshop that explores decolonial approaches to understanding the role of hauntology and folklore in contemporary Southeast Asia (SEA).

Under a colonial lens, focused on the documentable, the superstitions and folklore of contemporary SEA have been reduced to irrationality. However, these spectral narratives persist in our collective memories and cultures.

Spectral Narratives & Me begins with a remotely delivered talk by Singaporean anthropologist Ashley Chin, who will present her research advocating for narrative and against the Western tradition of dividing fiction/non-fiction in classifying SEA folklore. This will be followed by a talisman-crafting workshop using clay and other found materials. While crafting, participants will be prompted to reconnect with the “ghosts” of their histories. Their talisman will be a material marker of this engagement, offering an affective and decolonial approach to reading our cultural narratives.

While focused on SEA experiences, our workshop welcomes all. To create a warm, conducive environment for communal learning and exchange, participants will be offered refreshments throughout the workshop.

Blurring the lines between academia, research, and community engagement, our project asks:
How can we utilise craft to explore folklore and hauntology, and as a decolonial approach to understanding Southeast Asian history?
